A Central London Railway electric locomotive and train standing on
the shunting neck at Wood Lane depot in 1900. Wood Lane itself is behind the camera.
When the station at Wood Lane was built in 1908, the track level was lowered and
the line curved round to the right foreground. The station buildings were erected
immediately ahead of where the locomotive is standing.
The locomotives only lasted three years in
service. The trains were converted to multiple unit operation in 1903 because of the
severe vibration caused by the unsprung mass of the locomotives.
Note the track next to the train is not
electrified at this time. The yard at Wood Lane was not provided with current rails
until after the introduction of multiple unit operation in 1903. Until this time,
shunting was carried out by steam locomotives.
